Recollections on Dan Nicholes
I met Dan through Susan Butterfield shortly after he moved to Canada. He was soon welcomed into a group of five men who met over lunch on a monthly basis for conversations on political and other topics. They shared many values, interests and senses of humour and developed a collective friendship lasting until a few days ago, when Dan passed away.
Dan was kind, generous, empathetic and had a deep sense of and regard for the common good of society, as well as respect for democracy as essential to ensuring preservation of the fundamental rights of all. To these ends, in the United States and later in Canada he volunteered to help with electoral campaigns for candidates or their parties when they shared his egalitarian values.
He also was more broadly active in public interest matters, for example in volunteering to promote and assist the School Lunch program.
I close by mentioning that a decade ago, when I developed a cluster of serious health problems, Dan and Susan were prominent among the many friends and relatives who were very helpful to me so that, in addition to excellent medical care, I recovered.

Tears well up as I read this beautiful obituary for a dear friend. Dan was a kind, gentle and delightful man. We (Dave, Laura and I) all have lovely memories of our many times together, mostly with dogs (Max and Mila) and food... Dan was an adventurous person and enjoyed our forays into exotic cuisine, walks with (and without) dogs to Odell Park, Saint Andrews and just hanging out at home.
I am so glad we met and found so much common ground. As well, I feel honoured to have been part of the journey over the past months, and agree that the healthcare supports for both Dan and Susan were excellent, despite the inevitable outcome we all knew.
Rest easy, dear friend. You leave a legacy of loving kindness, and you are loved.

I have had the privilege of knowing Dan over the last number of years by connection through our mutual friend Gerry Clarke and the many all political chats we have regularly shared - through email exchanges or at a luncheon table - with Jon Thompson. Dan's keen intellect and broad life experiences have widely contributed to our discussions and he will be roundly missed. Our luncheon table is now much diminished.... and I for one will never again look at an Alfa Romeo without thinking of Dan. My sincerest sympathies, Susan.

Dear Susan so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I got to know him when I was Tutor Coordinator at MCAF. He was a kind and thoughtful person whose quiet presence meant a lot to those of us who got to know him. Marg Wall

Dan became a student of mine in the Mindfulness program that I teach at Brookside Wellness Centre here in Fredericton. Following the 8 week program, he and Susan regularly attended my noon meditation classes on Thursdays. I always appreciated Dan's gentle, insightful nature, and the kindness and interest that he held for each person in the class. Seeing Dan and Susan together as a couple was lovely and inspiring- they were like peas in a pod, and reminded me of my parents relationship. Susan, please know that you have my heartfelt condolences. Dan will be sorely missed.

I have only known Dan for a short few years after he and Susan joined the British car club. Even though he drove a Italian car he was welcomed by the club and was a great addition to our gatherings. Dan was a quiet, friendly guy, and I am going to miss having discussions at our weekly breakfast meetings. The last he attended was only a short few weeks ago. He didn't offer opinions often but was glad to share what he thought when asked. RIP Dan

One of the last adventures of our Covid Bubble. We were so grateful for our covid and post covid adventures with you and Dan. We will never drink a Greystone without toasting Dan. May the memories you created these past years sustain you.

Dan and family receive a visit at their Chicago home from the J. Marshall Seelander, Sr family. Pictures of Dan and his cousins Joanne Marie Seelander and John Marshall Seelander, Jr. Dan told me one of the dog's in the picture was his dog that came from his uncle George Custer Seelander in Oklahoma and I'm guessing the other dog was Joanne and J. Marshall's dog Pepper. Might be from the same litter, I can't confirm. Photo from the Summer of 1949.

Susan,
We are so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. To say he did it with dignity and pose is an understatement. Just a few weeks ago he attended our regular club breakfast where he was always engaged in the conversation of the day and never about his condition. When asked how he was doing , he always responded, I'm doing OK, and would quickly change the subject. Dan and you have always been there in support of the club and put on many great and memorable runs. We all enjoyed his company, his insightful conversation and his enthusiasm to be a "new Canadian" sometimes reminding us how great this country is to live in. We will miss him. Our hearts and thoughts are with you.

Susan and Family,
My introduction to Dan was a messenger chat on facebook from someone I had no knowledge of. I had just landed in San Francisco late in the evening and stumbled across the message awaiting my review.
As facebook scams are a plenty, I was skeptical to learn of this man named Dan Nicholes who apparently was my fathers 1st cousin. But excitement and intrigue accompanied my skepticism. Dan spelled out too many details about family for someone to find in research. With a little genealogy research, I confirmed the story.
I am blessed to have had a couple of email and facebook conversations with Dan and a short phone conversation before his passing. I had so hoped to make my way to Fredericton to meet. But it wasn't meant to be.
The Gustaf J. Seelander clan, although numbered 5 siblings only had 3 off springs. My Aunt Joanne and my father John Marshall, along with Dan. Dan was Frances Elizabeth Willard Seelander son. Sadly that generation is now departed and with their lord.
I so greatly appreciate Dan taking the time to making it a priority to find me. Dan must have been a unique person, using some of his precious time left on this earth to find his family, so he could pass on photo's from years gone by. A treasure trove of history for my enjoyment.
My sympathies go out to the family and friends who will greatly miss Dan. May you find peace in his generosity and his caring for others. Dan's mom was named after Frances Elizabeth Willard an educator, temperance reformer and women's suffragist. Sounds like Dan was cut from a similar cloth of service as his mom's namesake.
Peace to you all and hope one day our paths may cross. Some of my family immigrated from Ontario and Nova Scotia and I have the desire to visit those area's.
God speed to Dan, hope he and the Seelander Clan can reunite in heaven.
Sympathies,
John Marshall Seelander, III

I met Dan when He and I volunteered to help the Syrian refugees settle in Fredericton. A few months later he heard from shared friends that I just graduated and I was looking for a Job. He called me right away and arranged a meeting for me with Dr. Bill McIver. That meeting resulted in me getting a good job and meeting vey talented and good hearted people.
I will always feel indebted to Dan. He was such a kind hearted wonderful man to say the least.
